What is Line 3?
Line 3, first commissioned in the 1960s, is a 1,097-mile crude oil pipeline extending from Edmonton, Alberta to Superior, Wisconsin.
The Line 3 Replacement Project ($4-billion for the U.S. portion) consists of replacing existing 34-inch pipe with new 36-inch pipe for 13 miles in North Dakota, 337 miles in Minnesota, and 14 miles in Wisconsin. It is being built along a new route that avoids the reservation of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, which opposed replacing the existing line on its land.
Line 3 transports Canadian tar sands crude oil to the Superior Wisconsin terminal for delivery through the Enbridge Mainline System (including Line 5) to refineries in the Midwest, Eastern Canada, and the Gulf Coast.
