Putting carbon back into the soil

Agro-ecology:
How to put Carbon back into the Circle of Life
where it belongs

Mike Miles & Barb Kass
Anathoth Community Farm

Mike Miles and his spouse Barb Kass started the Anathoth Community Farm in 1986 as a center for the study of nonviolence, community, and sustainable living.

Anathoth Farm was built from the ground up and comes right out of the pages of Mother Earth News: buildings with solar heating and hot water, composting toilets, greenhouses, and a 10,000 watt photovoltaic grid tie.

Produce and maple syrup have been staple crops from the beginning with animal husbandry arriving on the scene about 13 years ago.

After becoming aware of managed intensive grazing and permaculture, Mike became a soil carbon cowboy. Steers, chickens, pigs, and cover crops are the tools he uses to build soil microorganisms while sequestering carbon and producing the tastiest, healthiest meat there is.

Together with Barb, Anathoth sponsors educational events on the farm to promote good health and sustainability.

Have you wondered if the lifestyle changes you are making and advocating will affect global heating?

What changes can be made that will be the most effective to change the trajectory of the climate crisis?

The goal is/was to limit global temperature change to 1.5° - 2.0° C (2.7° - 3.6° F) this century.  We're hitting that
1.5° C increase more than 75 years early!

Join us to explore the influence of population growth, consumption, building electrification, agricultural changes, etc. on the increase in global temperature, sea level rise and more.

"En-ROADS is a global climate simulator that allows users to explore the impact that dozens of policies—such as electrifying transport, pricing carbon, and improving agricultural practices—have on hundreds of factors like energy prices, temperature, air quality, and sea level rise."

COP 28: The Global Climate Gathering
A Flawed but Vital Process

Candice Owley

COP 1 was held in Berlin in 1995.  There have now been 28 COPs, the recent one held in Dubai. It was also the largest ever with 90,000 or more people in attendance.  As the COP has grown so to have the problems COP was established to address.  It is the one time each year when the whole world confronts the climate crisis but it also is a time to reflect on our collective failure to deal with the crisis.

As a first time participant and a formal COP28 Observer for the League of Women Voters US, Ms. Owley will share her experience and observations regarding the process, event, outcomes and value of the COP process.

00:58:04    JOE Dubaniewicz Kenosha-Racine:    Candice, did you see any EV charging stations (or EVs) in Dubai?
01:20:51    Terry Wiggins:    I understand that you're talking about justice and the environment. BUT,  Environmental justice or eco-justice, is a social movement to address environmental injustice, which occurs when poor or marginalized communities are harmed by hazardous waste, resource extraction, and other land uses from which they do not benefit. I support what you're doing, but I wish you could name it differently.

rethinking humanity
April 2023
Rethinking Humanity - a Film by RethinkX
Followed by Discussion
Humanity is on the brink of existential transformation, but we’re blind to the deeper processes of change. To recognize the mind-blowing possibility space of the next decade, as well as its catastrophic risks, we must grasp the patterns of history to understand how they can illuminate today.

Rethinking Humanity takes viewers on a whirlwind tour of the rise and fall of civilizations through a powerful lens that makes sense of the past, so that we can step into the present and create our future. During the 2020s, key technologies will converge to completely disrupt the five foundational sectors that underpin civilization, and with them every major industry in the world today. In information, energy, food, transportation, and materials, costs will fall by 10x or more, while production processes an order of magnitude more efficient will use 90% fewer natural resources with 10x-100x less waste.

The knock-on effects for society will be as profound as the extraordinary possibilities that emerge. For the first time in history, we could overcome poverty easily. Access to all our basic needs could become a fundamental human right. But this is just one future outcome. The alternative could see our civilization collapse into a new dark age. Which path we take depends on the choices we make, starting today. The stakes could not be higher.

00:48:39    Markp1950:    2300 SQ ft? Wow! I'm in 750 Sq FT looking to downsize.
00:53:53    Joe Dubaniewicz:    I am looking at replacing my older (2016) dual fuel Heat Pump with a high efficiency Heat Pump that will work efficiently at below zero outside temps. Now, the old one switches to gas heat at 40 degrees or below.
00:55:45    Markp1950:    Heating/cooling
00:55:54    Joe Dubaniewicz:    Great examples, Greg.
01:00:07    Markp1950:    I'm looking towards total off grid. Everythin gpowered by solar.
01:03:45    Joe Dubaniewicz:    Mark, I've got rooftop solar, an old Heat Pump, a hybrid Hot Water heater, an electric fireplace, but a gas range (wife's insistence). Also, an EV. Still have to learn how to get off the grid.
01:05:45    Markp1950:    I have a gas stove in my apartment.  I use my induction it is MUCH MUCH better.
01:10:24    Joe Dubaniewicz:    If you go all-electric, you don't need a Carbon monoxide smoke detector.
01:10:37    Markp1950:    My induction cook top cost me $90.  Works GREAT.
01:19:41    Markp1950:    Tesla is looking at producing a home heat pump.
01:21:21    Joe Dubaniewicz:    When the specs say 16,000 BTU how does that relate to Dan's slide that showed BTU / hour?
01:22:42    Markp1950:    I've seen 8x20 off grid tiny home for less than 40K. Solar and mini-split.
01:23:07    Joe Dubaniewicz:    FOE has Trade Ally recommendations for Heat Pump experts. not that many at all.
01:28:01    Markp1950:    ANYTHING to do with the government is scary.
01:29:35    Markp1950:    Tear it down and rebuild....
01:31:00    Joe Dubaniewicz:    First step could be an Energy Audit, then Weather stripping and Insulation, then the electricity upgrade.
01:31:11    Markp1950:    1st step is to dump WE Energies
01:31:33    Joe Dubaniewicz:    A monopoly, I'm afraid.
01:32:41    Markp1950:    Fight for THE RIGHT to  produce use and sell energy.
01:34:11    Joe Dubaniewicz:    Agreed. Deregulation was done in IL-Lake County (where I lived a few years ago).
01:34:39    Joe Dubaniewicz:    Also, Third Party Solar is being worked on.
01:34:47    Markp1950:    Again get WE Energies OUT of the picture.
01:37:39    Markp1950:    3rd party is expensive and a waste.
01:37:43    Phil Smith:    Rewire America has a great website that has a lot of the details on the Inflation reduction Act
01:37:59    Linda Frank:    Erick Shambarger is continuing to work on getting panelized housing constructed here in Milwaukee for net zero affordable homes
01:38:19    Joe Dubaniewicz:    Yes, Rewire America is a great resource.
01:41:31    Markp1950:    We were planning  an off grid community and the city bacled out. They listened to WE Energies.
01:44:04    Linda Frank:    Erick has obtained additional funding for grant applications due to the new federal opportunities
01:44:06    Markp1950:    That is $3.5 Billion

Going, going... gone - green Burial
december 2022
Katie Heinen and Terry Wiggins
Can we do good when we're dead?
What's the matter with current burial practices?
What are the alternatives?

These are the questions that Katie Heinen, member of Interfaith Earth Network (IEN), and Terry Wiggins, former member of IEN, will address, as they talk to us about natural burial, a.k.a. green burial.

01:32:12    Charlie Bensinger:      EVs are helpful but there's still the need for fossil fuels for heating and electricity production.

01:38:57    Mark1:      CB  Solar/Wind/Battery is the future. Lowering cost to near zero. It means fossil fools will be out priced. The grid will be solar wind battery. Check the work of RethinKX and Tony Seba  See their work on youtube. It will put fossil fools into a huge bubble. Coming faster than you think.
01:40:41    Charlie Bensinger:      Fossil fuels, solar and wind are 200+ yr old ways of generating energy. Hard to believe we don't have some kind of advanced energy systems more advanced? Unless we do, but they're being kept “unavailable” to the public.
01:44:04    Mark1:      Horses and animals for work/transport were dominate for thousands of years. In 10 years it was 80% cars and trucks.  Change is coming faster now
01:46:44    Charlie Bensinger:      How come our electronics and other technologies advance at lightspeed, but we’re still using an energy technology that’s unchanged since the start of the industrial revolution?
01:48:20    Mark1:      Solar/Wind/Battery are electronic. Competition is big in that area.
01:49:09    Mark1:      On patents Tesla gets a patent and puts them into open source.
01:49:59    Charlie Bensinger:      Good stuff if you're wealthy. No so affordable for everyone else.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is the lead state agency permitting the $450 million project. In December, it released a draft environmental review of the company’s plan that critics blasted as incomplete and flawed.

Now, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says the state's review failed to fully analyze the ways in which the project could harm the environment, as well as tribal resources and treaty rights.

"We think that many of the comments we've provided to take climate change into account, and to do a much more thorough review of the potential impact on tributaries and on those wetlands, will assist in a better review," EPA’s Regional Administrator Debra Shore told Wisconsin Public Radio's "The Morning Show."

He's a member of the Oneida Nation of WI, and of Ojibwe descent, with relations on many Ojibwe reservations here in Wisconsin and Minnesota. He's also a former Indian Affairs Policy Advisor under Governor Anthony S. Earl from 1982-1986.

Jill Ferguson:
Jill Ferguson was nicknamed “Badass Grandma” by the youth who watched her truthtell for hours to one officer after another ordered to arrest her at the Treaty People Gathering in June 2021. Some officers were moved to tears as she spoke of the water and lives that would be harmed by Line 3, as well as the personal harms they were suffering from their work. Most were not able to follow through with arresting her.
summary (view...)
Skabewis DeMain began by sending appreciation to people and organizations working with and helping water protectors and mentioning various ways help has been offered.  He then talked about the 100s of defendants in northern Minnesota arrested during protests and talks about Winona LaDuke’s experience.

He covers:
  • The ongoing work of Honor The Earth and its effect on jobs in northern Minnesota.
  • The Indigenous battles for the environment and how they welcome help from Caucasians, but much of the battle is being fought by indigenous people
  • Discusses corporate (including Enbridge and Lune 3) behavior in extractive industries and examples of environmental impacts.
  • The dangers of oil spills to watersheds, wild rice, aquafers, the great lakes, and more.
  • The Line 5 pipeline is now the focus of water protectors.
  • Enbridge’s behavior regarding the indigenous people and lawsuits that may affect Enbridge profit distribution and pipeline viability.
  • Corporate lobbying and actual beneficiaries of the pipelines.
  • Enbridge’s support of Tim Michels and the blessing of Michels’ by Trump.
  • Michels Corp. has the contract to construct Line 5 if it is built.
  • Notes that the Michels family live on the east coast.
  • What would it mean if Michels becomes governor and then appoint the Wisconsin DNR’s director?
  • Enbridge pipeline pin leak in Ashland that is costing millions to repair and 14 tons of dirt being removed.
  • Discussion of corporate tax benefits while the public pays for the cleanup of depreciated and stranded assets.
  • Impact of permits on the construction of Line 5.  Enbridge’s construction while awaiting permitting and how they will leverage the easements they acquire.
  • Oil&WaterDon’tMix.org and Michigan’s opposition to Enbridge.
  • The impact of lawsuits on litigation and speech  by organizations like The Sierra Club.
  • Why he believes that what happened at Line 3 was a victory even though the pipeline was allowed to be completed.
  • States Attorneys General law suits against fossil fuel companies for damages.

Nature Needs Half & Indigenous Leadership:

Transforming Society's Relationship with the Land
Watch and listen as Gwen Bridge and Amy Lewis discuss the importance of Nature Needs Half (NNH) and why a reconciliation of indigenous and western belief frameworks is important to preserving enough of earth’s ecosystem to sustain life.

Drawing on her indigenous heritage, western education and consulting work, Gwen shares experiences and insights on indigenous culture, the authority of nature, reimagining society, indigenous law, the impacts of residential schools, and more.  This leads to a discussion of Ethical Space and the differences and correlations at the intersection of indigenous and western society’s views and interactions with the natural world.

Amy discusses NNH’s foundations and its transformative vision of our relationship with and responsibility to nature – on which all life depends.  NNH draws on a long history including Traditional Ecological Knowledge, the Odum brothers, the 30 x 30 Movement to name a few.  She also touches on tipping points and Wisconsin’s relationship to the Boreal Forest which is one of five “lungs of the world” that stores one-third of global terrestrial Carbon.

The Climate Consensus
A network of concerned scientists speaking up for truth and our future
Our vision is to close the consensus gap between experts and non-experts on the subject of human-caused climate change by promoting effective dialog between scientists and the community. Our mission is to empower current and upcoming scientists to engage in climate change outreach. We are establishing pipelines between social and physical scientists and creating a culture shift within academia and the broader science community.

Enbridge Line 3
What the #&!! is going on?
plus Jill Ferguson - 'Bad #$$ Grandma'
and Tim Cordon - Building Unity Wisconsin
Line 3 is a tar sands pipeline currently under construction in northern Minnesota — violating treaty rights, risking over 200 bodies of water with the threat of an oil spill, and reversing our progress on climate change with a carbon equivalent of 50 coal-fired power plants.

Line 3 will have the capacity to carry nearly a million barrels of tar sands per day from the world’s most destructive oil operation in Canada. The company behind Line 3 is Enbridge, a multinational corporation responsible for the largest US inland oil spill. The pipeline route cuts through untouched wetlands and the treaty territories of Anishinaabe people, through the Mississippi headwaters, and to the shores of Lake Superior.
We take a look at Enbridge Line 3 and Enbridge's history of pipeline ruptures. Enbridge is building a new Line 3 the will allow them to double the capacity of Tar Sands Oil being pumped across and into the US. The risk to Indigenous People's treaty rights and lands, wetlands, rivers (including the Mississippi) in addition to the climate is a catastrophe waiting to happen.

We also hear from Tim Cordon of Building Unity and Jill Ferguson who has been arrested 3 times while protesting Line 3 construction in northern Minnesota. They talk about their first hand experiences on the front lines.

George Stone, Ph.D.

.Professor Emeritus of Natural Science
Humans are making Earth a broken and increasingly unlivable planet through climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. So the world must make dramatic changes to society, economics and daily life, a new United Nations report says.

“Our children and their children will inherit a world of extreme weather events, sea level rise, a drastic loss of plants and animals, food and water insecurity and increasing likelihood of future pandemics,” said report lead author Sir Robert Watson, who has chaired past UN science reports on climate change and biodiversity loss.

fair maps for wisconsin - gerrymandering

Fair Maps for Wisconsin - Gerrymandering
Matt Rothschild - Wisconsin Democracy Campaign
and
Representative Robyn Vining - WI Assembly District 14

Gerrymandering -
Why should voters choose the representatives
when the representatives can choose the voters?

Matt Rothschild is the executive director of the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign.  Prior to joining the Democracy Campaign at the start of 2015, Rothschild worked at The Progressive magazine for 32 years. For most of those, he was the editor and publisher of The Progressive. Wisconsin Democracy Campaign is working for a real democracy that allows the common good to prevail over narrow interests.

Representative Robyn Vining(D) was elected to the Wisconsin Assembly in 2018 when she flipped the 14th State Assembly District in one of the closest elections (138 votes) in the country.  Vining was the Primary Sponsor of 2019 Assembly Bill 303 (legislative and congressional redistricting) which failed to pass.  In December 2019 she was a principle driver in the launch of the next project of Forward Wisconsin: Fair Maps.  Rep. Vining won reelection in 2020 by more than 3,000 votes.
Redistricting - Why is it important?  The gerrymandering in Wisconsin has skewed the representation of voters in our government.  This leads to state policies (including climate) that do not reflect the majority of voters.

After each Census (i.e. 2020) the state's congressional and senate districts (both federal and state) are redrawn based on the census population numbers so that each district includes the same number of residents - equal representation.  2021 is the year those district boundaries will be redrawn.

"Partisan gerrymandering is a practice that attempts to establish a political advantage for a particular party or group by manipulating geographic boundaries to create partisan or incumbent-protected districts." - Fair Maps Coalition

Saving the Great Lakes and the Implications of Climate Change
During the Q&A a question was asked about the toxins that are released by harmful algal blooms. Tim followed up the next day with "The toxins are called microcystins: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microcystin"
The December 2020 National Geographic focuses on the Great Lakes and Tim's assignment to write on the Great Lakes begins with the 1969 Cuyahoga River fire.

In his interview with Great Lakes Now he says:
"Yeah, that was a challenge with such a complex system – the largest freshwater system in the world, what do you write about? But there are really three big problems that became obvious as soon as you at start looking into the story.  No. 1 is climate change is kind of the overarching problem that makes all the other problems worse, and if we don’t address climate change, all the other problems will be very difficult to remedy. So that was No. 1."

Milwaukee Alderman Nik Kovac spoke on
"The City vs. We Energies."

Nik Kovac is an alderman on the Milwaukee Common Council. First elected in 2008, Kovac represents the city’s East Side, Riverwest, and a portion of downtown.

Milwaukee Steps Up to Fight Climate Change - Shepherd Express, Feb. 12, 2019

“It’s obvious to see what is going on. WE Energies can’t even pretend to be for solar,” Kovac continues. “They are clearly protecting their monopoly on power, no matter how it’s generated. If anyone else tries to be innovative or efficient with money, they will throw their body in front of it. Not because it has anything to do with the world or their customers, but to protect their monopoly. WE Energies has more power than anyone else in our region and has used their power to expand their carbon footprint rather than reduce it.”

News release - by Ald. Nik Kovac- May 31st, 2019 10:40 am
“Supporting the federal Green New Deal legislation is a win-win for all of us,” said Ald. Kovac. “Not only will the Green New Deal mean a cleaner, safer, greener natural environment, but it also addresses the challenges to our built environment, such as overhauling our transportation systems to eliminate pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, and investing instead in clean, affordable and accessible public transportation.”

Dealing With the Global Warming Crisis On an Ethical and Spiritual Level

The news of increased global warming and climate disruption is more and more alarming.
How do we go forward to deal with this reality, respond to it, and not sink into despair?

Writer, lecturer and director of Center For a New Creation, Margaret Swedish writes,
"Climate catastrophe is already here, [as evidenced by current news reports]. So all the work we do now will be done in that context. Humans are going to have to start figuring out how to reinvent how we live on a warming planet while trying to keep things from getting worse than the warming already locked in over the next few decades. That will require seriously changing how we live."

"Our work now is not a salvage operation of a system moving into collapse, but to start putting our deepest ethical values and our most creative thinking into how we start moving into new ways of life.”

THE RELUCTANT RADICAL follows activist Ken Ward as he confronts his fears and puts himself in the direct path of the fossil fuel industry to combat climate change. Ken breaks the law as a last resort, to fulfill what he sees as his personal obligation to future generations. After twenty years leading environmental organizations, Ken became increasingly alarmed by both the scientific evidence of climate change and the repercussions for civilization as we know it. Ken pushed for a crisis level response from inside environmental organizations. Those efforts failed, and he now embraces direct action civil disobedience as the most effective political tool to deal with catastrophic circumstances.

Will Drawdown Reduce Global Warming?
january 2019
Guest presenter, Bruce Wiggins
Presentation based on the popular Drawdown book and website.

In addition to stopping the burning of fossil fuels, learn how we can draw down CO2 back into the earth.
Project Drawdown is the most comprehensive plan ever proposed to reverse global warming. We did not make or devise the plan—the plan exists and is being implemented worldwide. It has been difficult to envision this possibility because the focus is overwhelmingly on the impacts of climate change. We gathered a qualified and diverse group of researchers from around the world to identify, research, and model the 100 most substantive, existing solutions to address climate change. What was uncovered is a path forward that can roll back global greenhouse gas emissions within thirty years. The research revealed that humanity has the means and techniques at hand. Nothing new needs to be invented, yet many more solutions are coming due to purposeful human ingenuity. The solutions we modeled are in place and in action. Humanity’s task is to accelerate the knowledge and growth of what is possible as soon as possible.
